With many types of children's books (Board books, Picture books, Early Readers, Early Chapter) the categories are separated by book length and format. With these types of books, you can often just tell by the book's appearance what category they belong to.

Middle-Grade & Young Adult novels are starting to look like Adult novels in terms of look and length. The big difference between Middle-Grade, Youth Adult & Adult novels is the content and themes.

Young Adult novels are a transition period from children's to adult literature. Young Adult fiction is written for readers about 12 to 18-year-old. (Although, the genre is widely read by adults.) Young Adult novels often feature adolescent characters beginning to transform into adults. The characters are working through personal problems and learning to take responsibility for their actions.

Young Adults books are also starting to get into mature content.
